5 Reasons Why Valletta is the Perfect Place to Live In

Valletta, or ‘Il-Belt’ (The City), is loved by locals and tourists alike – but what makes this great walled city so popular? A quick look online will reward you with countless photos showing off our capital city’s incredible beauty, but let’s take a closer look at why so many people want to make Valletta their home!

1. Stunning Architecture

Living in Valletta means being treated to beautiful buildings and little architectural quirks are every turn. Described as an ‘architectural jewel’, the 2018 European Capital of Culture is a living treasure chest filled with majestic baroque buildings, imposing fortifications built by the Knights of St. John, and enchanting churches, to name just a few highlights.

2. Entertainment Haven

You’ll never be short of something to do here – whether you’re in the mood for some fine dining or just want to enjoy an aperitif with your besties, you’re sure to find something to suit you. When it comes to finding the right place for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, or drinks, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Valletta!

3. Drama Central

We mean theatre, of course! Valletta is home to the Manoel Theatre, the Royal Opera House (in ruins, recently converted into an open-air venue), and St. James Cavalier, a creative space where you can enjoy art exhibitions, less mainstream films, and live-streamed performance from the Royal Shakespeare Company, for example. If you love the arts, this is definitely the city for you.

4. Stunning Views

A view of Valletta’s sweeping skyline is pretty tough to beat, day or night! That being said, you’ll find loads of gorgeous scenery all over the city. Our favourite view right now has to be the Grand Harbour, seen from the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens!

5. Centuries of History

Around 1524, the Knights of the Order of St. John were proposed that a city should be built on the strategically-positioned Sciberras Peninsula. It was Grand Master Jean de Valette who gave the city its name and overall plan, and the rest is (literally) history! The city is alive with century upon century of history, from the opulent auberges and churches to its regal bastions, enduring fortifications, and beyond – you’ll find yourself falling in love with the place you call home every day.
